More than 1400 killed as second quake of 7.6 strikes Turkey, Syria

Another massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck Elbistan district in Turkey's Kahramanmaras province on Monday, Turkey's disaster agency said. Fresh tremors were also reported in Damascus, Latakia and other Syrian provinces.

This followed shortly after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday morning, killing over 1,400 people and injuring thousands more. Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under the rubble and the death toll was expected to rise as search and rescue operations continued. At least 912 people died in Turkey after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck early Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. In Syria, the earthquake killed at least 560 people.

The death toll from the earthquake, one of the region's strongest in nearly a century, has exceeded 1,400. The strong quake flattened hundreds of buildings. Images from the quake-hit areas show residents rushing outside in the cold night as the pre-dawn quake jolts them out of their sleep.

After the devastating earthquake that claimed over 1,400 lives in Turkey and Syria, India has decided to send search and rescue teams along with medical aid and relief materials. The European Union also said it was sending rescue teams to Turkey after the affected country asked for EU help. "The UK stands ready to help in any way possible," British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted, referring to the people of Turkey and Syria.
